Marble Sink Troughs

Marble Sink Troughs

Marble Sink Troughs, are so called because of their shape. Originally designed with a flat 'back' edge to go against a wall or under a waterpoint. The 'front' edge is curved to allow the animal to feed. Oten these troughs have tethering holes, where the animal is tied to the trough whilst feeding,   Marble is formed from limestone with heat and pressure over the years in the earth's crust.  The pressure or force causes the limestone to change in texture and makeup, the process is called recrystallization.  Fossilised materials in the limestone, along with its original carbonate minerals, recrystallize and form large, coarse grains of calcite.

The minerals that result from impurities give marble a wide variety of colours.  The purest calcite marble is white in colour, marble containing hematite is reddish in colour, marble that has limonite is yellow and marble with serpentine is green in colour.
